Best Ecuador coffee

Ecuadorian specialty is small in volume but increasingly visible at the top of the specialty market. The country's defining contribution to specialty in the last five years is the Sidra varietal — a Bourbon-Typica natural hybrid native to the country's highlands that's been propagated to neighboring Colombia and Peru and now produces some of the most distinctive cups in specialty. Ecuadorian specialty mostly comes from the Pichincha and Loja provinces. The country's small specialty volume means most Ecuadorian lots that reach Western roasters are micro-lots from named farms — often via direct relationships rather than commodity channels. Producers like Juan Peña at Hacienda La Papaya have built reputations comparable to Panama's top producers.
